The Polish government reports that it has seen a new wave of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa attempting to cross into the country illegally from Belarus, claiming that the migrants travel first to Russia.
The Polish National Security Administration reports that the Polish border guards have reported that the majority of migrants trying to cross into the European Union through the Polish-Belarus border are from sub-Saharan Africa.
Africans are allegedly able to legally obtain visas to travel to Russia and then make their way to Belarus, where they attempt to cross the border into Poland illegally, according to the Associated Press. Reports.
“[The migrants] I authorized them visas to study or work, but according to the certificates obtained by the Border Patrol, they never had such plans and only used the visas to cross the immigration route,” the DHS said.
“At the same time, the Russian administration is facilitating visa procedures,” the ministry stated, adding: “The measures taken by Russia and Belarus confirm that the artificial migration route is controlled and coordinated by these two systems and in the future, we should expect that the hybrid operation aimed at The destabilization of NATO’s eastern flank will only intensify.”
Last year, Poland blamed Belarus for sending migrants to its borders, some at gunpoint, in what Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime called a “hybrid war”.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki spoke about the issue in November 2021, calling it the largest attempt to destabilize Europe since the end of the Cold War.
Europe, our common home, is under threat. “At this very moment, a mixed war is taking place on the Polish-Belarusian border, which Alexander Lukashenko, with the support of the back room of Vladimir Putin, declared against the entire European Union,” said the Polish prime minister.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, some have speculated that Russia may emulate Belarus and try to send migrants across the border to European Union countries in retaliation for economic sanctions.
Charlie Salonius Pasternak, a senior researcher at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, warned in April that Russia could engage in a hybrid war as Finland looks to join NATO.
The Finnish government has also expressed caution about possible Russian moves, and in June it considered reforms to the Border Guard Act and the Emergency Powers Act in order to deal with a possible increase in the number of illegal immigrants in the future.
