At least nine people were injured after someone opened fire on a crowd outside a bar in Cincinnati, Ohio, early Sunday morning, according to local news and police.

The mass shooting took place in the city center at about 1:30 a.m. when the suspect laid down their weapon, NBC News mentioned.

Lieutenant Colonel Mike John of the Cincinnati Police Department said an officer fired a shot at the suspect, who was still shooting at the scene, according to the report.

“We don’t know if that officer hit the person who was shooting,” John said. During a press conferenceNoting that the suspect left the scene.

According to John, the victims had “lower limb injuries” and were not in critical condition. They were taken to the local hospital for medical treatment.

“Today’s events are wholly and utterly unacceptable,” Aftab Borival, mayor of Cincinnati, said in a statement, according to the report. “Using guns to resolve conflicts cannot become a normal part of our culture. I want to express the city’s gratitude to the officers on site. Their quick response likely saved many casualties and prevented loss of life.”
