The Nebraska Cornhuskers Some new faces in the middle room, but Casey Thompson It has the upper hand to be under the center to start 2022 college football season.
Nebraska coach Scott Frost said the team’s primary quarterback position is a “mission to lose” for Thompson, highlighting the positives in the veteran’s game, ON3.com reported.
“I don’t know if he broke up with himself,” Frost said. “He played really well.” “Other players have played well too. He’s obviously the guy with the most experience. I want him to keep improving. I want all the guys to keep improving. We have really good players around who’s going to be the quarterback.
“But seeing a lot of consistency, and you can tell he’s experienced because he does some things that young midfielders don’t. He has a really good feel in the pocket, having really good leadership.”
Thompson moved to Nebraska after three seasons in Texas, where he served as a base starter in 2021. Meanwhile, quarterback Chuba Purdy moved to Nebraska after two seasons in Florida, where he earned a breakout playing time.
Thompson finished 2021 with 2,113 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions and 154.7 quarterbacks, and completed 63.2% of his passing. He also cut 157 flush yards and four quick touchdowns.
Frost sees more “zip” on Thompson’s passes since his thumb was off-season.
“I have to tell you, his play has really gone up since the spring, and I think that has something to do with it,” Frost said of Thompson’s procedure. “We have a lot of midfielders playing well at the moment, but I’m really happy with what I’ve seen from Casey, and we’re going to let him continue to work. I think he has more confidence, more than anything else. But maybe there’s more pressure on the ball. And a little bit of control over football, frankly.”
Adrian Martinez was the primary quarterback for Nebraska from 2018-21. He moved to Kansas State after the 2021 season. The Cornhuskers finished the regular season 3-9 (1-8 in Big Ten play) with eight of their nine losses being one game.
Nebraska opens the 2022 season against Northwestern on August 27 in Dublin, Ireland.
