A clash between cartel gunmen led to the discovery of at least six bodies and two severed heads along a highway north of the Acapulco tourist attraction.

The horrific case occurred in the early morning hours of Friday when authorities in the state of Guerrero responded to a rural community in Quichultenango. The crime scene area is located just over sixty miles north of Acapulco.

When the authorities arrived at this location, they found a truck that had been shot several times and set on fire. Near the car, the authorities found six bodies and two severed heads.

Guerrero’s attorney general’s office confirmed the discovery in a prepared statement claiming that they would investigate the case.

The bloody crime scene comes at a time when multiple cells of rival drug cartels continue to struggle for control of beach lanes to transport drugs to Mexico from Central and South America, control of vast drug growing areas in remote rural areas, and on a large scale. Despite several years of extreme violence, the mayor of Acapulco, Apelina López, tried to reduce violence in her city and was even publicly mocked for her claim. Hunger and high temperatures are responsible for most crimes.
