McNeil, who was making his first competitive match after moving from Burnley, failed to go forward – Sky Sports’ Sky Score swipe at his show.

By doing so, they also mercilessly mocked Alli in a brutal match update.

It reads: “McNeil’s rather disappointing beginnings end. Speaking of disappointing, Dele Alli is on.”

Just like McNeil, Alli was unable to impact the match as his team lost 1-0 to Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The 26-year-old has not hit the ground running since his move from Tottenham.

Speaking ahead of Everton’s game against Chelsea, Frank Lampard said he was hoping “the support” and “tough love” will bring the midfielder back to his best.

“It is possible to work with him to be a target,” he told reporters. “He has an instinct to get into the scoring positions, and we need to find ways to bring him back into those positions and maybe restore trust in him as well. Which is why I brought him to the club.

We all know the situation [at Spurs]. At the same time, we also knew if we could put him in the beautiful place he was in, it would be a great fortune for us. It’s a clean slate on so many levels for everyone this season and for sure.

“He has worked hard in pre-season and will be a very useful player for us if he continues to apply himself in the right way.

“I think sometimes it’s support and sometimes hard love. Sometimes you have to hear serious things to get the best out of yourself. Dele or any player is too.”
