OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) – Canada plans to temporarily ban the import of handguns into the country without Parliament’s approval, using a regulatory measure that takes effect in two weeks.
Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said Friday that the change will continue until the permanent freeze is passed in Parliament and takes effect.
The government introduced gun control legislation in May that includes a national freeze on the import, purchase, sale and transfer of handguns in Canada, but it has not yet been passed.
The temporary ban will prevent companies from importing handguns into Canada with a few exceptions that mirror those in legislation introduced in May.

As Secretary of State, Melanie Jolie says she has the power to ban any import or export permit in Canada.
Government trade data shows that Canada imported $26.4 million worth of Canadian pistols and revolvers between January and June — a 52 percent increase over the same period last year.
But much of the little gun violence that exists in Canada is done through illegal weapons smuggled from the United States.
