Pittsburgh Steelers listed Mitchell Trubesky as early leader In their battle in the middle in their first official depth chart. The Seattle Seahawks haven’t released a depth chart yet, but coach Pete Carroll has given us some ideas on who tops between Genu Smith and Drew Luke. For now, Carroll says Smith is “up front.”

“They keep doing things every day, they make plays,” Carroll said of the quarterbacks, Via Pro Football Talk. “They both play every day. I’m watching to see how it swings; if things go heavy in one direction, heavy in the other. The guys are doing a great job. We’re working hard to match the cast with the guys who play up front, and the receivers, we’re working on getting that done, And it’s going to happen, and you’ll see how it happens again tomorrow, how the cast is distributed, just so we can have a really level playing field.

“Gino is still in the lead, he’s ahead, he’s been in the lead for all the obvious reasons, he’s keeping it up and doing a really good job in the fight. Both guys communicate beautifully, they’re learning really well, we don’t have any issues with anything we’re trying to do.” . There are no issues here where we have to ‘Oh, we can’t do this or that with this guy or that guy’, it just isn’t. They are very talented, they have the ability to throw the ball into the court. So, let the matches begin. Going out, we are now in the middle of it, and we’ll see what happens. It’s a really big day tomorrow. It’s going to be a really big day tomorrow.”

Smith shouldn’t be on top at this juncture, as he’s been with the franchise since 2019. He got some sprints as a starting quarterback last year when Russell Wilson was injured, and his goal was 1-2. In four total games played last season, Smith threw 702 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.

“He does things right,” Carroll said of Smith. “It deals with the system, performs checks at the line of melee, is able to control protection and work with [center] Austin [Blythe], these guys hit her really well, and he’s really talented. He was making big throws every day. I’m still looking for them to really get in, really own it, put days together where they don’t have any negative plays, and the plays they want to take back. So, in a sense, there were opportunities for both men not to take the whole day, get it all done, and end the day near perfection.”

As Carroll said, this competition is far from over. We still have three games left before the start of the season, and the midfielder with the most success in these exhibition matches can lead the attacking start to the field on September 12. Then again, it’s also possible that Seahawks will add quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the competition. It’s something from the front office have discussed.
