The Madison County, North Carolina School District has placed an AR-15 in a safe at every school in the district so weapons can be accessed for classroom defense in the event of an attack.
Citizen Times Notes Madison County schools will also have penetrators and additional magazines for rifle ammunition.
The boycott’s decision was framed as a response to the May 24 attack, Ovaldi, Texas.
USA Today mentioned That Madison Sheriff Buddy Harwood paid for AR-15s in the aftermath of the attack, stating that he didn’t want bad guys to be able to get into a school and stick around in a classroom with helpless officers.
“I hope we will never need him,” said Harwood, “but I want my companions to be as prepared as possible.”
“We have been able to put an AR-15 rifle and safe in all of our district schools. We also have penetrators to get into those lockers. We have extra magazines with ammo in those lockers,” Harwood explained.
In the event that someone is immune to the door, we will not have to wait at the fire department. We’ll have these tools to be able to break through that door if necessary. I don’t want to have to run to the car to take the AR, because that time is wasted.”
