- A Brazilian man had his nose operated on himself, the Sao Paulo health department told Insider.
- He was treated in the emergency room before being referred to the oral and maxillofacial surgery and psychological services team.
- According to local media, the man had seen a YouTube video about his DIY rhinoplasty.
A Brazilian man has been hospitalized after undergoing rhinoplasty himself, prompting YouTube to remove an educational video about rhinoplasty, according to a report.
The Municipal Health Department told Insider that the man, whose name has not been released, showed up to the emergency care unit in Campo Lembo in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on July 21.
After visiting the ER unit following a DIY rhinoplasty procedure, the patient was visited by the on-site mental health team before being referred to the oral and maxillofacial team.
“The team cleaned and bandaged the wound and provided guidance on the necessary care,” the Ministry of Health said in an email.
He was discharged from the hospital on the same day.
The man was referred to an oral and maxillofacial team and a psychiatric service for long-term care.
Brazilian media reported G1 That the patient watched YouTube tutorials on how to perform rhinoplasty at home, thus copying the procedure that only trained medical professionals should perform.
The municipal health department told Insider it had no information on this. YouTube did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.
However, G1 reported that YouTube removed an educational video about DIY nose jobs shortly after it went into hospital for the public. G1 also said YouTube has since imposed age restrictions on videos that show viewers how to perform minimally invasive nose procedures.
According to the doctors G1 interviewed, performing rhinoplasty on your own can lead to serious complications, such as necrosis, infections, stuffy nose, and anaphylactic shock.
