At least 12 people were killed and several others injured when a bus skidded off a highway in northern Croatia, police said.

Croatian Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic told reporters that the passengers were adult pilgrims who were traveling to Medjugorje, a Roman Catholic shrine in southern Bosnia.

“We have 43 injured, 12 of whom are deceased,” said Maja Gruba-Bojevic, director of the Croatian Emergency Medical Institute.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, police said, adding that the bus is registered in Poland.

“All the victims are Polish citizens – we can at this point confirm this,” a Polish foreign ministry spokesman told Polish private television station TVN24. ‘The bus has Warsaw license plates.’

The accident occurred at 5:40 a.m. local time (11.40 p.m. ET on Friday) about 30 miles north of the Croatian capital, Zagreb, on the A-4 motorway, which is crowded during the peak tourist season.

Croatian media reported that rescue teams were dispatched to the scene. No other details were immediately available.
