“Regarding the people who have been convicted in Russia and the United States… there is a specific channel that has been agreed upon by [Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden]”No matter what anyone says publicly, this channel will remain in place,” Lavrov said at a press conference in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, on Friday.

“We are ready to discuss this issue, but within the framework of the channel agreed upon by the presidents,” Lavrov added.

His comments come a day after NBA star Britney Greiner was found guilty of intentionally smuggling drugs into Russia and sentenced to nine years in prison, in a case that raised fears that it was being used as a political tool in Russia’s war against Ukraine.

During the trial, Grenier pleaded guilty to carrying less than 1 gram of cannabis oil in her luggage while traveling through Moscow airport on February 17. She testified in court that she was aware of Russia’s strict drug laws and had no intention of bringing in cannabis. In the country, saying that she was in a hurry and “mobilizes the tension.”

Before the verdict was pronounced, Greiner apologized to the court and asked for leniency in an emotional letter.

“I never meant to hurt anyone, I never meant to endanger the Russian population, and I never meant to break any laws here,” Greiner said.

“I made an honest mistake and hope in your judgment it doesn’t end my life here. I know everyone keeps talking about political pawn and politics, but I hope it’s out of this courtroom.”
