Joshua Brereton of Paw Paw, Michigan, has been charged with arson for an organization that receives federal funding. If convicted, Brereton faces up to 20 years in prison, according to the Department of Justice. The charge also carries a mandatory five-year minimum sentence.
According to court documents, law enforcement responded to a reported fire at the Kalamazoo Planned Parenthood in late July. After putting out the fire, the local fire chief noticed the flames ignited from two separate sources – in the bushes outside the building, and from “a log of a bonfire that looked like it had been thrown on the roof.”
Through Planned Parenthood surveillance footage, investigators determined that the person who started the fire used the Duraflame log to start the fire on the roof, according to court documents.
They then inspected store records and learned that Brereton had purchased a Duraflame record at their local Walmart store less than two hours before the fire. Court documents say Brereton’s appearance in the store’s security camera footage matches that of Planned Parenthood.
Investigators say they have located the Britton YouTube channel, where he posted videos critical of the government, taxes and abortion.
“As now, we have a genocide,” Brereton says in one of the videos, according to court documents. “Genocide! Children! And people think that’s always a hot topic. You literally have neighbors who think it’s okay to kill a child.” He continued to encourage viewers to “change society from the inside out” and told them, “Nobody is going to do that.”
According to the court’s agenda, Brereton has yet to file a formal petition. Brereton Lawyer is not yet listed.
