Italian populist Matteo Salvini, the leader of the League, claimed that only 15 percent of illegal immigrants who came to Italy in 2021 were granted refugee status and more than half were denied asylum.
Salvini, who has made illegal immigration one of his top priorities ahead of next month’s national elections, said that in 2021, Italian authorities rejected 56 per cent of 52,987 asylum applications submitted last year.
The League leader said the refusal comes “despite the fact that the left has reintroduced special and humanitarian protection to offer shortcuts to those landing in Italy,” and added, “Only 8,107 people received refugee status: 15% of all applications examined.” El Journal Reports.

Salvini previously blamed Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese, a member of the Left Democratic Party (PD), for the situation and called it “a disgrace to the Democratic Party: we can’t wait to turn the page, thanks to the Italian vote on September 25”.
During 2018 and 2019, Salvini served as Minister of the Interior, and his strict policies, which saw NGOs ban taxis from Italian ports, were credited with significantly reducing illegal immigration and reducing drowning deaths in the Mediterranean.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that there were more illegal arrivals in July this year alone than in the whole of 2019 with 13,197 migrants arriving in Italy last month.
“In July of this year, we exceeded the landings recorded throughout 2019. We can’t wait to return to the government to take care of the labour, security and defense of Italy,” Salvini stated, adding, “We need a minister ready to defend the borders, we owe that out of respect for the Italians who They are facing difficulties.”
Opinion polls put the Salvini League far behind Their allies in the center-right coalition, the Italian National Conservative Brotherhood (FdI) led by conservative social rioter Giorgia Meloni, who could become the country’s new prime minister.
Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, to whom Forza Italia is a member of the centre-right coalition, has stated that he is open to Meloni becoming Italy’s next leader, while foreign media such as Washington Post I tried newspaper Melonie hook and her fascist party.
