The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has called for a warning for the Wuhan coronavirus vaccine Novavax about two potential heart-related side effects in those taking the vaccine.

The EMA stated that Novavax, a traditional protein-based vaccine rather than an mRNA-based vaccine, should be prescribed with a warning of the potential side effects of two different types of carditis.

according to Report From Reuters, EMA would like to list myocarditis and pericarditis as potential side effects of taking the vaccine, side effects that have also been seen with mRNA vaccines, especially among younger males.

The risk of myocarditis has led some governments to stop some vaccines for certain groups, including France, which suspended Moderna’s vaccine doses for those under 30 in November last year.

U.S. Senator Rand Paul also expressed concerns about myocarditis among young adults after the vaccinations were taken in January, saying, “I believe it is medical malpractice to force vaccinations on children, especially teenage males.”

“We now have the scientific evidence showing that the risk of developing myocarditis in young people is greater for a vaccine than it is for a disease. We also know that the disease – the mortality rate is closer to one in a million.

“We will work with relevant regulators to ensure that our product information is consistent with our shared interpretation of the incoming data,” Novavax said in a statement.

EMA’s recommendation comes just weeks after the agency’s note severe allergic reactions Novavax vaccine as possible side effects. Since its approval in December in the European Union, about 250,000 doses of Novavax have been administered.

While the Novavax vaccine has been available in the European Union and Canada for months, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States approved the vaccine for adults only last month.

“If you’ve been waiting for a COVID-19 vaccine based on a different technology than previously available, it’s time to join the millions of Americans who have been vaccinated,” said Dr. Rochelle Walinsky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
