Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he was asked by the federal government to test for drugs for a year after he smoked cannabis on Joe Rogan’s podcast in 2018, adding that “entirely SpaceX” was affected.

Talking about the accident while appearing on full send Released Thursday night, Musk said he has received “a lot of backlash,” including from SpaceX competitors, because cannabis is illegal at the federal level and because SpaceX has federal government contracts.

“The consequences for me and SpaceX were actually not good,” the tech billionaire said, adding that he wasn’t expecting much criticism. The interview — which went viral at the time — was conducted in California, where marijuana is legal for both medical and recreational use.

“I had to do these random drug tests and other things after that, to prove that I’m not like a drug addict,” Musk said, adding that the federal government requires these tests. “They tested me drugs for everything, and randomly. It wasn’t like ‘picking a day.’ I had like a whole year of random drug tests.”

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t just me, but the whole company, the whole of SpaceX, had to do random drug tests,” Musk continued. It’s unclear exactly how many workers have been affected, but SpaceX has been affected About 6000 employees in early 2019.

“If there are people in prison in America for the same things, shouldn’t we release them too?” Musk said. “My opinion is that people should not be in prison for nonviolent drug offenses.” Musk has previously criticized how the United States persecutes weed-related crime.

“Some people are still worried about these things,” he added.

Musk has not commented on how often he smokes cannabis, but said he has a little bit of skill with it.

“I don’t even know how to smoke marijuana, I mean definitely look at me, I don’t have any co-smoking skills,” he said.

Musk repeated previous comments he made that cannabis “isn’t good for productivity,” but said the narcotic could be beneficial for some mental health conditions.

During the three-hour interview with Full Send, Elon Musk also confirmed that he had nine children, dismissed theories that aliens might exist, and said he’s moved into a $45,000 property in South Texas.
