For the second season in a row, Arsenal begin a return to the Premier League, but they are hoping things will turn out a little better than their loss to Brentford to start last season. There is good reason to expect improvement after adding Gabriel Jesus and Alexander Zinchenko, Mikel Arteta is doing his best to bring the Manchester City environment to the Emirates Stadium.

For Patrick Feria, he would like nothing more than for Crystal Palace to take the next step in their lead by dropping Arsenal to open the season. They’ve made smart additions in the transfer market and one of the nice things about the start of the season is that all teams are equal. Even without Michael Ulis, and Conor Gallagher’s return to Chelsea, Crystal Palace will have a big battle to protect their home turf.

Storylines

Crystal Palace: Thanks to tours in Australia and Singapore, Crystal Palace faced the unique challenge of having to form separate teams during the pre-season which didn’t give Vieira the best chance of working with all the players together. Some players haven’t met each country’s entry requirements, but they’re all together now as he’s also looking to incorporate new player Chris Richards into the side. Most team members will be available but Michael Ulis, Sam Johnston, Jack Butland and James MacArthur will not be available for the match.

Arsenal: Arteta has a health certificate nearby. Emile Smith Rowe, Fabio Vieira, Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiasu will miss the match but with the new system that will see Ben White at right-back to allow the attack to stay more forward. It gives Arsenal plenty to go forward in support of Jesus while also balancing the defense as Oleksandr Zinchenko goes down the wing.
